It’s difficult to overstate the impact that winter has on people, cultures, and communities, especially in colder climates.  There are plenty of ways to measure the differences, and they show up in various ways.  A favorite example of infrastructural difference due to cold: University of Minnesota’s Gopher Way system is a series of connected tunnels that allow students to travel underground in winter.  I doubt that the University of Miami has anything similar.

As the season turns, one of the biggest obstacles for people in cold climates is what to do as a family without driving each other crazy.  You’ll be spending lots of time in a house together, the more fun activities you have to do, the less bickering and sniping will occur.  If you’re looking for a few fun winter activities that are great to do with the family, look no further.

Let It Snow

If your in an area where it snows, you know that snow can mean different things for different people.  If you’re a commuter, snow is your worst enemy.  But if you’re a young family, snow becomes a magical, whimsical experience.  Embrace how your kids see snow and approach it with the same wonder and joy that they do.  There are plenty of fun things to do outside as a family in the snow, and the more active you are, the longer you can stay outdoors.  If you’re looking for something a little tame, a nice hike in snowy woods can help you appreciate how quite snow makes the world around it.  A drive through the local neighborhood to look at holiday lights is another lowkey activity to enjoy as you see snow dance in the light.  If you’re looking for something a little more active, let the type of snow determine what activities you do.  Dryer, fluffier snow doesn’t pack so well.  So it’s ideal for sledding or tobogganing.  Don’t be afraid to scout out a few local hills for some fun thrills.  Wet snow is perfect for packing.  Building igloos or snowmen are great exercises in collaboration and creation.  Of course, if you want to blow off some steam, there’s always the great conflict presented by snowball fights: just be careful not to hit anyone in the face!

Keep It Cozy

No matter how active you are outside in the cold, eventually, the cold will win.  When your nose has frozen, and you can’t feel your toes, it’s a good sign that maybe it’s time for some indoor family fun.  There are countless indoor winter activities you can do and plenty of variety for all kinds of interest.  Baking is a classic choice for families who want a sweet treat at the holiday.  Not only do you get to enjoy each other’s company, but you also get to enjoy the fruits of your labor!  Taking a trip to the library for a couple of hours is a great way to stay indoors but get out of the house.  Let your kids know you’ll be there for at least an hour, and they’ll find a book to cuddle up with in a nook.  If you need something a little more competitive or active, board games and card games are the perfect way for a whole family to play together with games that put everyone on a level playing field.  And, of course, a hot drink like tea, coffee, or hot chocolate with marshmallows wouldn’t hurt in any of these scenarios.

For families, especially young ones, winter is an inspiring time of year.  The wonder brought about by the snow and lights is unmatched by any other season.  While it can be easy to fell with the lack of daylight and chilly temperatures, investing time and love into your family is the easiest way to combat these feelings.
